Stablecoins are basically two chains

79%Ethereum + Tron share of all stablecoin float

A CEO said on stage this week that there is “$300 billion of stablecoins” while discussing what he watches in the Avalanche ecosystem. The number is right. It is also the number for every chain that exists, added together.

Current float, all chains: $304.2B.

Chain Float Share
Ethereum $146.43B 48.14%
Tron $94.07B 30.92%
Solana $15.34B 5.04%
BSC $13.79B 4.53%
Hyperliquid L1 $6.83B 2.24%
Base $4.94B 1.62%
Arbitrum $3.77B 1.24%
Polygon $2.94B 0.97%
Avalanche $1.39B 0.46%

Ethereum and Tron together are 79%. The $300B figure is 215 times what Avalanche actually holds.

I don’t think anyone was lying. The industry total gets quoted so often that it detaches from its referent, and then it gets repeated inside a sentence about one chain, and the audience hears it as that chain’s number. It happens on every ecosystem stage, not just this one.

Why it matters past the gotcha

The same week, Aave announced an RWA hub on Avalanche — institutions posting tokenized financial assets as collateral to borrow stablecoins, with Tether’s USA₮ named as a dollar liquidity source.

Aave V3’s entire Avalanche market is $259M, 1.54% of Aave’s $16.8B. Ethereum is 84% of it.

Tokenizing collateral is the half everyone can do. A treasury bill becomes a token, the token goes on a chain, there’s a press release. The other half is that a borrower has to find dollars on that chain, in institutional size, at a price that isn’t absurd. Collateral ports. Liquidity doesn’t.

You can watch which half a given announcement is about. If the news is a new asset type being wrapped, that’s the easy half. If the news is that someone drew down $200M against it and the rate held, that’s the other one, and those press releases are much rarer.
